Ruma as modern town has heterogeneous economic life and more than 7500 employees. The primary branch is agriculture and very successeful is tannery-manufacture branch.
Ruma Tannery is one of the largest and most
successful 
manufacturers of bovine hides and pigskins in the country. It manufactures
all kinds of leather for the shoes for children, ladies and man, small and
large goods, custom-made equipment. It is thus one of several manufacturers
with such a large list of products. The tehnology is higly modern, fast and
enviroment-friendly. The efficiency of the avaible capacity never drops below
80%.
Rumaguma is a renown manufacturers of tractor
tyres in Serbia and Yugoslavia. Its main products are outer tyres in 81 sizes,
dimension
about 190 variations and five-year quarantee. Since 1961 when it was established
this rubber manufacturer has been expanding both the output and the list of
products. Over the time it created new forms of associating and liaising with
other manufacturers in the Yugoslav market and with forein partners. This
resulted in a bussines and tehnology cooperation with Sempertin, and later
on with the "Kontinental" corporation in Germany. The quality of their products
is affirmed in world marketas it sells mor then 60% of its output in more
then 30 countries.
The Industry of Construction Materials (ICM)
in Ruma keep up the brickmaking tradition. The oldest circular kiln for brick
firing dates from 1879. In the period between two world wars there were tree
brickyards owner by 
the Germans: Taschner, Rausch and Lenner, and one owner by Serbs: Jaric and
Bajic. IGM in its present form was established in 1965. Since then it has
significantly improved and modernized its production. In 1972, by the eastern
city gates, a new factory for hollow blocks started operation with the annual
output of 12 milions solid blocks and 36 milion standard size bricks. This
factory is the largest brickyard in Srem. It is also one of the most important
industrial plants in Vojvodina and in the whole country.
With hot and cold production lines of 10000-12000
ton capacity Rumen is the largest plant for fruit and vegetable processing in
Yugoslavia.
The production programme is rich and versatile. The plant offers frozen vegetables
such as peas, string beans, spinach, carrots, cauliflowers and different kinds
of paprika, as well as frozen fruits - sour cherry, raspberry blackberry.
The plant has become very well known for its pasteurized programme which includes
cucumbers, beets, different kinds of paprika, fillets, chopped pepper salad,
mixed salad, tomato concentrates, ketchup and juices. The production process
is modern, food is healty without preserving afents and other additives.
Rumaplast is company with tradition and expirience.
Its 
average annual output of 5500 ton PVC pipes and fittings, 50 to 400mm. diameter,
up to 10 bar working pressure plus 500 ton additional output form the cooperation
with small businesses places the factory among the leading in that field in
Yugoslavia. It was built 1976 and since than it supplied for water mains and
sewage to all parts of the country. The company has been awarded many times
for the manufacture of PVC pipes made by extrusion proces, used on numerios
building sites.
The Gas - Ruma public gas company was establish on January 1, 1995. Its main activity is natural gas distribution. The company is also is in the business of gas system development and installation, wholesale and retail trade in gas equipment, house gas installation, maintenance ane servicing of household gas meters. According to a long term plan gas will be distibuted to all communities in the municipal territory of Ruma and 15000-2000 household connections will be made. The town gas installation project was started in 1991. According to the schedule the gas distribution network should be finished by the year of 2002.
Rumix is comparatively young factory but has
already acquired a good reputation. Its basic activity is the production of
fodder, capacity 
25 ton a day in tree shifts, marketed on a wide area, from Subotica to Nis
and form Mali Zvornik to Zrenjanin. Its own trucks fully loaded cruise the
roads in order to duly satisfy the market requirements for fodder. The main
products are complete feed mixed for domestic animals. This covers first of
all poulty, fattened chickens, egg-laying hens, pigs and "super" for feeding
fettened pigs. The achievements fo this privately-owned Ruma enterprise are
connected first of all to quality of products offered to the market.
