NYRock made great interview with Marky
Ramone :
"As the drummer of one of rock's most influential bands, Marky
Ramone has left a clear mark on popular music. Not one to rest on his
laurels, after 30 years Marky continues to forge ahead with his
current hard-driving outfit, the Speedkings. NY Rock recently grabbed
a few minutes with Marky to discuss some of his past and present
projects, including the bittersweet dynamics of the Ramones, history's
first Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame punk band."
NYROCK
What have you been up to?
|
MARKY Jerry Only from the Misfits, who is the only original member left, asked me to play with him and Dez Cadena from Black Flag. We've been touring together doing Misfits, Ramones and Black Flag songs. The audiences have been around 16-19 years old and we've been doing about 80-90 shows a year. I've also been working with the Speedkings and doing a spoken-word tour where I talk about my times in the punk rock scene. |
| NYROCK What's the spoken-word show like? Is it like Henry Rollins? |
|
MARKY: I'm not a comedian. What I do is talk about when punk started in '73 and '74. There aren't too many people left to talk about it. The Ramones started in CBGB's in '74 and I was playing with Wayne County at the time and then Richard Hell left the Heartbreakers and asked me to join the Voidoids. |
| NYROCK I heard that Joey's brother, Mickey Leigh, is collaborating on a book with Legs McNeil, who wrote Please Kill Me. Will you write one? |
|
MARKY: I'm up to 160 pages, but it's not going to be like Dee Dee's books Lobotomy and Chelsea Hotel. Dee Dee was my best friend, but he fantasized a lot, which made him a great writer. A lot of the stuff in his two books is 75% fact and 25% imagination. I knew him so well that I could pinpoint the stuff that wasn't real. |
| NYROCK In Lobotomy, Dee Dee talks about how the Ramones didn't get along. It almost seems as if you were the band peacemaker. |
|
MARKY Me and Dee Dee were the closest. Johnny and Dee Dee didn't really like each other. Dee Dee always complained that Johnny didn't contribute to the songwriting, but he would get credit on the songs. That irked him, and the fact that Johnny took Joey's girlfriend away from him in 1981, which caused a lot of friction in the band. That festered until the band retired in '96. Johnny and Joey didn't talk to each other for 18 years. |
| NYROCK That must have been tough traveling in the bus.... |
|
MARKY: Fuck the bus, we were in a van. Anytime Joey would want to relay a message to Johnny, he would have to go through me and vice versa. And they'd be standing 3-4 feet away from each other! We took it out on our music and the music speaks for itself. There was also resentment from Dee Dee leaving in 1989. |
| NYROCK Why did Dee Dee leave in '89? |
|
MARKY He left to pursue a rap career. There was nobody who could write like him and he was one of the founders of punk rock. He couldn't take the bickering between Joey and Johnny, so he left. |
| NYROCK: How did you deal with Joey's and Dee Dee's deaths? |
|
MARKY I knew Joey was passing away because of the cancer. We did a solo album together called Don't Worry About Me. When Dee Dee died it was unexpected since he was clean. I told him anytime he needed someone to talk to I was always available. |
| NYROCK Had he been clean a while? |
|
MARKY He liked to smoke pot a lot, that didn't kill him. |
| NYROCK What was it like being inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame? |
|
MARKY: You work all those years and you're the first punk band in with all the greats like Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, who helped contribute to the progress of rock. |
| NYROCK: What was it like having Eddie Vedder induct the band at the awards ceremony? |
|
MARKY: Eddie Vedder has nothing to do with punk rock and I feel it was more of a Johnny thing, since Johnny moved to Hollywood and he's always wanted to be Mr. Hollywood. They're a whole different breed out there. I think Joe Strummer or Johnny Rotten would have been cooler to induct us, not somebody that is into grunge. |
| NYROCK: He looked pretty silly in that Mohawk too.... |
|
MARKY: It was like, let's be the punk for the day. Nice guy, but we were never into his music. |
| NYROCK: Did Johnny run the Ramones? |
|
MARKY: Johnny never ran the show. He thought he did, but he didn't. His bark was bigger than his bite. We all had equal say in a lot of things, but since Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee were the originals, their say was more important than mine. Since Dee Dee was always high on something and Joey and Johnny didn't talk, I was asked a lot of time what I thought since a lot of the decision making was done on spite because of their animosity towards each other. |
| NYROCK It was a shame Joe Stummer left us so early.... |
|
MARKY I toured with them in '77 with the Voidoids. We did a Clash tour together in September and October of 30 days where I got to know him real well. |
| NYROCK: In the press room at the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame dinner at the Waldorf Astoria, here in NYC in March 2002, the band couldn't even face the photographers for a group photo. It was very strange.... |
|
MARKY: Dee Dee didn't want to be around John and no one had really seen Tommy since 1977. I dedicated my award to Charlotte and Mickey, Joey's mother and brother, since Joey was gone. They didn't want Charlotte and Mickey up there. |
| NYROCK: Why was that? |
|
MARKY:
It was Arturo Vega and Johnny's insistence. Arturo Vega, who was basically a lighting and merchandise man for us, even wanted us to turn our backs on Charlotte and Mickey. Johnny even came up to me and asked me to stop kissing Charlotte and Mickey's ass. I told him if I wasn't at the Hall of Fame I'd take him outside and kick the shit out of him. |
| NYROCK Any opinions on the current rock scene? |
|
MARKY: I'm still glad Rancid is together. They're unique and hold up the torch for that kind of music. The Toilet Boys are cool too! |
| NYROCK: What about the Ramones tribute albums coming out? |
|
MARKY: Real bad. The only good thing about the new We're a Happy Family is Kiss and Rancid. I couldn't believe when I heard it. What the hell do Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson and U2 have to do with punk rock? A good tribute record is Gabba Gabba Hey. |
| NYROCK Do you and Johnny talk anymore? |
|
MARKY No, his remark when Joey and Dee Dee died was, "Who cares? It will sell more records." |
| NYROCK: Does Johnny play music anymore? |
|
MARKY No, there is a rumor going around that me, him, Eddie Vedder and CJ will tour and I would never do that. |
| NYROCK: Is their any Ramones material that will be released? |
|
MARKY: Fifteen songs that Joey demoed with Daniel Ray on guitar with a drum machine will be re-recorded for a second solo Joey record. |

Phil Spector Arrested
![]() |
"Iconic
producer Phil Spector was arrested Monday in connection with the
shooting death of a woman at his mansion in a Los Angeles
suburb...The victim, a woman whose identity is being withheld
pending notification of her family, was pronounced dead at the
scene..." |
"...Spector,
63, is being held at the Alhambra police station. Bail was set at $1
million, according to the spokesperson. Attorney Robert Shapiro, whose
clients have included O.J. Simpson and Darryl Strawberry, is defending
Spector, but he declined to comment...
Spector is also widely known for his eccentricities. Dee Dee Ramone
told MTV News before his death last year that while recording the
Ramones' End of the Century (1980), Spector held him hostage
for two days and had a number of guns in his mansion. However, Dee
Dee's bandmate Marky Ramone told Fox News on Monday that Spector was
not violent. "I don't think he would hurt a fly," the drummer said...
The producer has allegedly pulled guns on numerous peers over the
years, ranging from John Lennon to David Geffen, according to various
biographies..."

Message from Marky :
"I read Dee Dee Ramone's new book "Life of a RockStar". It's
entertaining and fun and really good reading. He talks about the Ramones
and the workers such as Monte Melnick, our great tourmanager that
we had, Arturo Vage, our tshirt man and all around butt boy to the
roadies and everything in general about the Ramones.
It is typical Dee Dee style. Loved it. I will be finished with my
book somewhere end of March. The name of my book will be "Faith in
the BackBeat", about my times in the punkscene before, during and
after the Ramones. I wanna thank everybody for comming to our shows
on the West Coast and Richard Beltzer for his review of the band in
Seattle and Rodney Bingenheimer. We have twelve shows to go before
I go to Europe to tour with Jerry Only and Dez Cadena. I will put
on dates of spoken word shows that will come on soon.
Very shortly the SpeedKings and me will hit Mexico, Canada and the
East Coast. Some European/Russian dates might come up soon too.
The second album is finished and hope to get in the stores by April.
Hope to see everybody at the Key Club in LA on the 16th of Janauary.
Happy New Year to you all ! MARKY RAMONE"

Joe Strummer R.I.P.
A statement released by his record label
said Strummer "died peacefully at his home." It added that his wife
Lucy, two daughters and stepdaughter "request privacy at this harrowing
time."
The son of a British diplomat, Strummer -- who spent most of his youth
in boarding schools -- teamed up with Mick Jones, from working class
South London, to found the Clash in 1976.
White Riot, Train in Vain, London Calling, I'm So Bored with the USA,
Career Opportunities, Should I Stay
or Should I Go, and (White Man) In Hammersmith Palas are just some in the line of the
songs in hearts of fans around the world.
After Dee Dee this is one more hard punch for punk fans around the
world. "The Clash are to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame next year and there was hope that there would be a reunion and a
tour...this must be especially sad for their fans," said Pat Gilbert,
editor of British music magazine Mojo.

"Hi Everyone !
This summer, the Misfits tour was a lot of fun. Especially Canada and the
West Coast. We kicked ass ! The band is me, Jerry Only and Dez Cadena from
Black Flag. The oldies album will be coming out shortly. It's 10 songs
done Ramones/MIsfits style. Ronnie Spector and Jimmy Destri from Blondie
are on it.
I am proud to say finally the Ramainz album will be out in a month on
Sanctuary. The same company that put out Joey's solo album. As you all
know it is the classic live album from NYC that I did with Dee Dee Ramone.
And thank you all for the positive reactions on the SpeedKings album and
shows that we have been doing this month in the South of Europe (France,
Spain, Italy).
We will be heading for Japan in a couple of weeks. Starting somewhere the
end of November.
THe re-release of the Ramones CD's sound great and the packaging is also
cool. I wanna thank the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame for including me as a
member to vote on who is up for the r'n'r hall of fame inductees for the
years to come. These are great guys and gals.THe Ramones are putting out
their Greatest Hits album next month with 30 songs.
After we finish the SpeedKings tour I will be doing the Halloween Misfits
tour in the US, coast to coast.
It's great to see all the Ramones fans, Misfits fans and SpeedKings fans
coming to all the shows and having a good time. We will all rock till we
drop cause we enjoy every second of it. Come by and say hi !
Marky Ramone"
02.10.2002.
"To pick myself up out of this onslaught of
good and bad, the Speedkings asked me if I would record the CD with
them."
-Marky Ramone
It is in this tradition that Marky Ramone continues on with The
Speedkings releasing "Legends Bleed" on October 22, 2002. His best work
since the Ramones, features the same balls to the wall style that made
them the inspiration for countless followers. The disc
includes 17 new studio tracks as well as 4 Ramones covers performed from
their New Year's Eve concert live in Berlin, Germany.
Marky Ramone about the Speedkings:
"I knew them as friends, I liked what I heard and had fun doing it. It's
different and the song structures allow me to play differently than what
I played with the Ramones - a fast, frantic and tight band. Enjoy your
life.."
In an unforgettable year that saw the Ramones suffer ultimate losses
with the passing of Joey and Dee Dee, they also gained the highest
respect and legendary status that they so much deserve as a true
American original.
"The new century turned out to be a handful of expected and unexpected
events. First, the passing of Joey Ramone, then the Ramones receiving
the lifetime achievement award from MTV, along with the band being
inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Then my best friend Dee Dee
Ramone passing away three weeks after the Rock & Roll ceremony...To pick
myself up out of this onslaught of good and bad, the Speedkings asked me
if I would record the CD with them."

Arturo make fraud !!!
From Marky Ramone's Wrecking Crew :
"Marky asked me to let everybody know what he told to me, there are two
important things:
First he says: Don't buy the upcoming TRIBUTE TO THE RAMONES album,
he said to me "you can tell everybody that Marky told you that it
SUCKS!!" , Marky heard it and he HATES it, he says that Motorhead and
Rancid are ok.. but apart from them he really insisted on the fact that
the RAMONES never liked any of those bands!!!
He said that this album is just Money-Making and he hates that!
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS !
the Second thing is about Arturo and OfficialRamones.com: Marky says
that Arturo is selling fake autographs of Joey! Arturo signs himself, so
don't buy the autographs he is selling!
That is what I had to say, a promise is a promise and I think that Marky
is right to be angry.
Please tell everybody what I told you,
Thanx a lot!
Thomas-"
...
"I don't know about the tribute part but
Marky told me exact the same
thing about the fake signatures on his previous tour in Europe." - Sniper

A TRIBUTE TO THE GREATEST PUNK BAND
EVER
*Limited edition bonus track on all
initial pressings.
THIS IS JOHNNY'S PROJECT AND HE IS WORKING HARD AT IT. IN HIS OWN WORDS:
How did you get involved with
the upcoming Ramones tribute album?
JR- I was approached about it and I said, "Yeah I'll be involved but I
have to have full say." They said, "Yeah fine." So I said, "I can get
Eddie Vedder, I can get Rob Zombie and I can get the Chili Peppers and
Marilyn Manson and Metallica." I told them right away who I could get, and
they said, "Whoa, that's great, fine." So that's how it developed.
I heard you encouraged bands to come up with drastically different
takes than the originals.
JR-I tried whenever possible. Some bands are going to be more Ramones-like
but with other people I said, "Just try to pretend you wrote the song and
you never even heard the Ramones version." Rob Zombie's "Blitzkrieg Bop."
Manson's "The KKK Took My Baby Away," those are pretty bizarre. You're
going to have to hear them. I can't describe it. Rob Zombie sounds like
Zombie doing "Blitzkrieg Bop." It doesn't resemble the same song. Eddie
Vedder's version of "I Believe in Miracles" sounds like the version I wish
we would have done. It's just a punk version. We were holding back. We
were trying to make it commercial and this and that, and Eddie just did a
punk version of it and sings it great. It's what we would have done if
somebody wasn't saying, "It's got to be this speed -- we got to get to the
click track and measure the right speed." They were looking at it as a
single and doing it like that. The Pretenders' version of "Something to
Believe In" is great. I never liked the song, but whatever they did to it
is great."
It's coming in October, for more visit Official Ramones site.
In a commercial for a new car (Citroën C8) they put Joey Ramone 'Wonderful world' song.

The Ramones disbanded in 1996, and lead singer Joey Ramone died in
April 2001 of lymphoma, a form of cancer, aged 49.
In his autobiography - Lobotomy: Surviving The Ramones - Dee Dee Ramone
wrote about his struggle with alcohol and drug abuse.
The bassist's death comes 11 weeks after the band was celebrated with
induction into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
"I'll never forget Dee Dee's classic acceptance
speech at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony," Ramones manager Gary
Kurfirst said in a statement, "when he walked up to the microphone and
said, 'I would like to thank myself, and congratulate myself, and if I
could, I would pat myself on the back.' That was Dee Dee, direct and to
the point. ... Dee Dee Ramone was punk rock. I'm really going to miss him.
He was truly a unique individual and there will never be anyone like him."
...
"I was still working out the final details on Joey's headstone when I got
the shocking word that another brother in our extended family was gone,"
said Mickey Leigh, Joey Ramone's brother. "For me, he was one of the
greatest rock and roll songwriters alive. Today, sadly, another life
becomes legend. My heartfelt sympathies go out to his wife, family and

Here's message from Daniel Kuntz in Marky Ramone
Wrecking Crew Yahoo group:
"Hey all,
This is a copey of what I wrote to a bud of mine concerning the ROCK N
ROLL hall of Fame.
I MANAGED TO GET TO THE ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME ceremony in NYC last
Monday. It was very short notice but my friend and I made it. HOW you
ask???? PRESS PASSES. We
managed to get press passes for my friends radio station to cover the
event. What can I say the Ramones were great. Dee Dee`s speech was fucken
funny....Tommy was great and well John was funny too, nice and short which
is more than I can say for Eddie Vedder`s speech. The re-broad cast
on VH1 was totally edited they cut all kinds of stuff out. The VH1 crew
were beside me in the press room, bunch of pompus asses. Arturo
jumped in front of me when the Ramones came in the Press room (I think it
was him) hahah he
is in some of my shots haha. I have many pics of the Ramones and others
plus video I can send you when I get them scanned. I probley have 25 plus
of the Ramones back stage plus my friend got Johnny and CJ in the
hall way. I also got video of Mickey and Joeys Mom back stage in the
press room. Joey`s Mom and Mickey came out for some questions. The
Ramones came out first.
This is what was asked to the Ramones back stage by the Press:
Note: the Ramones were only back stage in the press room for 4 to 5
min the shortest of all the bands question to the Ramones---"where does
this stand for accomplishments as far as the Ramones are concerned?"
answer---Dee Dee--"I think like we are very lucky, we have unlimited luck
potential, I would also like to thank Marky Tommy and Johnny.
answer---Johnny--"You just hope to sell a few records, you don`t ever
think you could be in the same place as Elvis"
question to the Ramones---"did Joey know that the Ramones were going
to be inducted while he was sick?"
answer--Tommy Ramone---"it was very important to him that we be
inducted, it was one of the last things we talked about"
question to the Ramones---"What did Joey say about it?"
answer--Tommy Ramone----"It just meant allot to him that we be

Overall it was allot of Music Business CRAP..... long long fucken
speeches i.e. Isaac Hayes and Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads) man they were
fucken painful. But in the hole sceem of things it was great to be there
for the Ramones. We gave Marky a HANSON BROTHERS CD when they left
the press room. The Hanson Brothers are a great band from Canada
that pay tribute to the
Ramones. We saw them in Toronto before we went down to NYC and were
talking with them about how we were going down to NYC for this and they
wished they could be there so they were in a sense ahahahah. I wonder if
Marky likes there new CD?"

Message from Jari-Pekka Laitio:
Gabba Hey friends!
Arturo asked me to send info for you, if you can add mention that people
who preorder Joey's CD from officialramones.com get.....
" Here is the deal, you get Joey's CD with its release cover, PLUS you
get the Arturo Vega-designed cover that was not used FOR FREE. It comes
in a separate jewel box and it includes one of the coolest photos ever
taken of Joey by top photographer and cool dude Steven Sebring. But what
really makes this the ultimate Joey Ramone cover photo is that it was
taken on the corner of 2nd St. and the Bowery - the corner that will
soon have the name JOEY RAMONE PLACE. How is that for perfection?"
More infos of that deal on Arturo's page.

Let's hope it will finally work out...
NEW YORK - The East Village street corner located a few yards away from
legendary punk club CBGB is one step closer to being known as Joey Ramone
Place. On Wednesday, the Public Safety and Transportation Committee of
Manhattan's Community Board 3 unanimously approved a proposition by
20-year-old Maureen Wojciechowski to dub the corner of East Second Street
and the Bowery after the late punk icon who, along with the likes of Patti
Smith, Television and the Talking Heads, helped bring the genre to life at
CBGB in the mid-'70s. "I came up with the idea right after Joey's
50th birthday, but wasn't sure exactly how," Wojciechowski, a Staten
Island resident, said. "Then someone mentioned honorary street signs, and
how, as is the case with most in the city, no one knows who they are
[named for]. So I thought, 'That's it. I'll put one up for Joey Ramone.' "
In order for Joey Ramone Place to become a reality, the proposal must be
approved by the 50-member community board at a meeting on November 15.
Members of the committee said they're fairly confident their decision in
favor of the honorary street sign won't be met with opposition. Ramone
died of lymphatic cancer April 15, and plans for a party to commemorate
his 50th birthday were carried out by his mother and brother in May.
Wojciechowski first approached the board in October, and she was
instructed to return with a petition of support signed by local residents
and businesses, which she brought to Wednesday's meeting. "The Ramones
were just so much fun, and Joey was such an individual," Wojciechowski
said. "Twenty years later he was still the same person that he was in the
'70s - nothing changed. I saw him two years ago, and he looked exactly as
he did in 1978. He was true to New York City, and he was really
cool."Hilly Kristal, owner of CBGB, attended the meeting, as did Ramone's
mother, Charlotte Lesher, and John Holmstrom, co-founder of Punk magazine,
who gave a name to the punk movement.
"The East Village, probably more than any other place in the city,
historically has been the melting pot of people who became famous and went
to do wonderful things," said Kristal, a 28-year resident of the
community. "Joey Ramone helped countless musicians, more than any other
artist I can think of. He stood for something good. Joey left a very
important mark on New York and the East Village, especially, and I'm proud
that he played CB's and proud that he made his home here."
Although the proposal was to bestow the honor on a single corner,
Wojciechowski said she'd like to see Joey Ramone Place stretch one
crosstown block to Second Avenue.

"After doing the Roseland show with the
Misfits, the Roseland afterparty and the spoken word show, all dedicated
to the memory of Joey, I am now in Europe now.
We are finalising the album with the new band. We decided to put 14
songs on it and they will kick ass. We expect "On the Beaten
path" to hit the streets within 8 weeks.
From tomorrow on we will do a few shows. One is a nice festival and the
two other shows are cool punk venue clubshows.
After these shows, I will be in California doing the Palace Theathre
show with the Misfits. Remeber LA was the place for the last Ramones
show. There is no better place to say goodbye to Joey and hello again to
all you dedicated fans.
Hope to see Ramones and Misfits fans.
On Friday 4th of May, there will be a Hollywood instore signing. Check
your local paper for details. Other shows will follow in California and
we'll hook up with the Warped Tour for 8 shows. Our friends of Rancid
will be there too.
Next Monday the CBGB's memorial show for Joey is on. Be there and have a
good time. Enjoy the music and the good memories.
And hope the Hammerstein Ballroom show goes really good too !
For all you punkrockers out there, we will appear at the Holidays in the
Sun Festival in the UK on July 8th. It will be the biggest punkrock
celebration and 100 bands are expected on 4 stages.
Wait until you hear Joey's solo album, it kicks ass too. Happy to be on
it. It's great to be able to look at the big picture of life."

Joey Ramone was
buried at Hillside Cemetery in Lyndhurst, New Jersey."At least he
has a good view," said a visibly distraught Deborah Harry, of
Blondie, who once cavorted with Joey in the photo pages of Punk
magazine. Also among the dozens of weeping friends and family members on
hand as a rabbi read Kaddish at the Ramones singer's graveside were
Blondie guitarist Chris Stein, singer Joan Jett, original Ramones
drummer Tommy Erdelyi and New York DJs Vin Scelsa and Dennis McNamara.
An hour or so earlier, at a service at Schwartz Brothers Memorial
Chapels in the Ramones' old home town of Forest Hills, Queens, Joey's
brother, Mickey Leigh, told the mourners that, while he could talk the
whole day long about his late sibling, "my brother could have said
it all in two minutes and 10 seconds."
When the song came to an end, Joey was
gone. That night, at a concert in Portland, Oregon, U2 offered their
audience a rendition of the Ramones' "I Remember You" ("a
great, great love song," says Bono) and, for Joey, the old hymn
"Amazing Grace."

Kevin thanx for forwarding this :
Punk Rocker Joey Ramone Dead at 49
By LARRY McSHANE
.c The Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) - Singer Joey Ramone, the punk rock icon whose signature
yelp melded with the Ramones' three-chord thrash to launch an explosion
of bands like the Clash and the Sex Pistols, died Sunday. He was 49.
Ramone, the gangly lead singer with the leather jacket, tinted glasses
and permanently-torn jeans, was hospitalized in March 2001 with
lymphoma. His death was confirmed Sunday by Arturo Vega, the Ramone's
longtime artistic director.
The Ramones - its four members adopted the common last name after
forming the band in 1974 - came out of Queens, a motley collection of
local losers with limited musical skills. Joey became the lead singer
only after his drumming proved too rudimentary to keep up with his
bandmates' thunderous riffs.
While British bands such as the Sex Pistols and Clash received the media
attention once punk rock exploded, both were schooled by the Ramones'
tour of England that began on the U.S. Bicentennial - July 4, 1976.
``They changed the world of music. They rescued rock and roll from
pretentiousness and unnecessary adornments,'' said Vega.
Their ``do-it-yourself,'' garage-rock influence still echoes today in
bands like Green Day and the Offspring. The low-tech Ramones spent just
two days and $6,000 recording their 1976 debut album.
``They're the daddy punk group of all time,'' said Joe Strummer, lead
singer of the Clash, in a recent Spin magazine interview.
Despite their influence and critical acclaim, the Ramones never cracked
the Top 40.
Bruce Springsteen, after seeing the Ramones in an Asbury Park, N.J.,
club, wrote ``Hungry Heart'' for the band - but his manager convinced
The Boss to keep the eventual hit single.
The Ramones' best-known songs reflected their twisted teen years in
Queens: ``Beat on the Brat,'' ``I Wanna Be Sedated,'' ``Now I Wanna
Sniff Some Glue,'' ``Teenage Lobotomy,'' ``Sheena Is a Punk Rocker.''
Joey Ramone was born Jeffrey Hyman on May 19, 1951. His career started
during the early 1970s glam-rock era, when he played in several New York
bands - occasionally under the name Jeff Starship.
But his collaboration with Dee Dee, Johnny and Tommy Ramone was
something special. They became fixtures in downtown clubs like CBGBs and
Max's Kansas City, joining fellow punkers like Patti Smith and Richard
Hell. The scene eventually produced commercially successful bands like
Blondie and the Talking Heads.
The Ramones recorded their first album of two-minute, three-chord blasts
in February 1976. The band then earned a loyal cult following with a
seemingly endless string of tours where they would crank out 30 songs in
90 minutes.
In 1979, Joey and the band appeared in the Roger Corman movie ``Rock N'
Roll High School,'' contributing the title song to the soundtrack. They
also did the title track for the film ``Pet Semetary,'' based on the
book by Ramones fan Stephen King.
Their last real stab at commercial success came in a bizarre 1980
collaboration with producer Phil Spector - a session that bassist Dee
Dee Ramone recalled most for Spector's pulling a gun on the band inside
his Beverly Hills mansion.
Joey eventually wound up singing a syrupy version of Spector's classic
``Baby, I Love You'' - the strangest recording of the band's 22-year
career. The Spector-produced ``End of the Century'' did become the
Ramones' best-selling record, hitting No. 44 on the charts. Five years
later, the band released ``Bonzo Goes to Bitburg'' - Joey Ramone's angry
rant about President Reagan's visit to a German military cemetery.
The Ramones disbanded in 1996 after a tour that followed their final
studio album, ``Adios Amigos.'' A live farewell tour album, ``We're
Outta Here!'', was released in 1997.
Since the band's demise, Joey Ramone kept a fairly low profile -
occasionally popping up to perform or host shows at Manhattan clubs,
making occasional radio show appearances, and working on a solo album
that was never released.
13.04.2001.
At this moment, the MARKY RAMONE GROUP is recording a brand new album. There will be 16 brand new tracks. The songs are fast, loud and total kick ass rawk’n’roll. An American legend combined with the Euro-Rawk approach of Nick and Stevey make this record rock like hell.
Guest appearances are made by Ben Trokan (vocals on two songs) and Mark Neuman. The record should be out sometime in June.

"Ramone's Battle for Health
One of New York's original punk rockers is fighting for his life. Joey
Ramone, 49, lead singer of the Ramones, a band out of Forest Hills that
spearheaded the downtown punk scene in 1974, is in a New York-area
hospital battling lymphoma.
The group, which Joey formed with Marky, Dee Dee and Johnny - all of
whom adopted the same last name as the band - broke up only five years
ago. But the mark they left on the genre, due in large measure to their
early albums - which featured such tracks as "I Wanna Be
Sedated," "Teenage Lobotomy" and "Cretin Hop" -
are forever part of New York musical history.
Ramones spokesman Arturo Vega told me that the patient has had a good
week.
"Joey watched a tape of 'The Sopranos' on Wednesday," said
Vega. "He's doing better and better."

"Psihomodo Pop" dolazi u Beograd, Novi Sad i Suboticu. Bice ukupno biti četiri koncerta 22. marta u Malom Spensu u Novom Sadu, 23. marta u beogradskoj Hali sportova i 24. i 25. marta u subotičkoj diskoteci "Lifka".
Nick Cooper :
"Don' look for to much explanations or backgrounds... When people are together for some time, sometimes it feels better to move on and do different and other things for a while. That is life. This is all I can say about it. The Intruders are/were great. The Ramones are/were the best... But time moves on... So go with the flow and enjoy what comes your way !"

After more than a dozen albums, 20 years in the business and 16 million live tour dates (more or less), the Ramones called it quits in 1996. But their music lives on in films like DETROIT ROCK CITY and IDLE HANDS and just this week, in the new Rhino Records' double CD HEY HO LET'S GO! featuring all the band's hits, a slew of rarities, outtakes and oddball wonders. We sat lead singer Joey Ramone down and he set us straight on things like his serious illness Howard Stern keeps talking about ("I had a cold. It must have been a slow news day"), what he's up to now and Jar Jar Binks.

In fact, his testament to domestic harmony during the holidays, "Merry Christmas, I Don't Want to Fight Tonight" (featured on Rhino's Ramones anthology), is a chestnut that roasts on many CD players during the holiday season. Last year the mighty MTV dubbed it one of the top ten Christmas records of rock. While Ramone won't say who he penned the song for, except to say that "every girl I ever went out with thinks I wrote it for her," he plans to perform the classic on Dec. 11 at New York's Continental Club, with an all-star band comprised of Marky Ramone, ex-D Generation singer Jesse Malin, the Dictator's Andy Shernoff, Misfits and Ramones producer Daniel Rey, Uptown Horn's Arno Hecht, Psychedelic Furs keyboardist Joe McGinty, Tricia Scotti and Sophia Ramos, from Ronnie Spector's band. Joey Ramone will not only preview some material from his upcoming solo album and lead the crowd in Christmas songs, but will also do a set of Ramones songs with horror punk-ska band the Independents . . .

GQ magazine declared Joey Ramone one of the "Godfathers of Punk". Joey says: "The music scene changed for the better when the punk movement exploded. It changed everything. Clothing, fashion, magazines. It was a street thing. And the designers picked up on it. It's pure American. It's from the guts." Photo on the Bowery.

Speculation
By JOHN ROCKWELL
The Ramones, a young rock quartet from Queens, have been playing here and there recently (at CBGB's earlier this week), and it's a lot of fun.
This is yet another group in what has become a fixed New York pattern. Black leather jackets, a parodistic macho camp swagger, and furious blasting rock and roll. But what the Ramones offer is non-stop energy (based on double-time guitar strumming), a few clever hooks, and sudden start-and-stop endings to their songs. For all the underground image, this is a band with obvious commercial potential, and one imagines that potential will start being realized very soon.

A NEW TUNE
Last week Rudy Giuliani accused Hillary Clinton of promoting drug use by playing Billy Joel's Captain Jack when she announced her run for the Senate. (The song contains a drug reference.) Joey Ramone, lead singer of the Ramones, a New York City punk band, suggests a different campaign tune. Joey says, "How about Beat on the Brat? Giuliani is a brat. He gets the job done, but he's a brat, and he takes himself a bit too seriously. New York's about having a good time. We're a fun city, and this song is all in good New York fun."
