DACHI WASA (stances,
basic foot movement and falling)
We teach these basic stances: shizentai, neko ashi dachi,
kiba dachi, zen kutsu dachi, tsuru dachi, kosa dachi, iaigoshi dachi. All
this stances can be used during fight. These stances are not low, modern
stances, but high and very mobile. Beginners learn simple stepping (ashi
sabaki). Also during warm-up beginners practice basic falling
techniques (ukemi wasa). These techniques are essential for later
learning of advanced techniques (throwing, join-locking...)
KEN WASA (fist)
Fist techniques are first to learn for beginners. Fist
techniques are relatively safe and all beginners are familiar with basic
use of fist. We teach old way of fist punching (as shown in Kushanku
kata) without of "corkscrew" movement, aimed at various
targets. Basics are: seiken choku tsuki (direct punch), kage
tsuki (roundhouse punch), age tsuki (uppercut), hiraken
tsuki ("hidden punch"), gedan tsuki (shock
punch in genitals), uraken uchi ("backfist"), tetsui
uchi ("hammer") and tomoe tsuki (double
punch).
SHUTO WASA ("knife
hand")
There are two basics ways of shuto, both can be used for
striking and blocking is used in many ways. (1) Soto shuto is
roundhouse outward knife-hand strike. (2) Shuto is
snappish inward strike, usually aimed to neck.
TEISHO WASA (palm)
Palm is one of the most devastating weapons of karate. It is
used for smashing various vital areas of opponent: jaw, nose, back head,
elbow, floating ribs...) and for blocking.
Basics are: jodan teisho (jaw smash), soto teisho (back
head smash), gyako teisho (nose smash), chudan
teisho (floating ribs), gedan teisho (genitals).
NUKKI WASA (fingers)
Finger techniques are very painful when applied on opponent's
soft tissues. Basics are:
nukkite tsuki (larynx grab), moroto nukite (both
thumbs in opponents eyes), sagurite (eye jab) and washide
("eagle claw" - pinching).
EMPI WASA (elbow)
Elbow techniques are very powerful and effective in close
distance situations. We teach three basic techniques: age empi (uppercut),
mawashi empi (roundhouse) and ushiro empi (back).
GERI WASA (kicking
techniques)
We are teaching only traditional kicks which can be used in real fight.
There is no high, roundhouse, spinning.... kicks, just plain front and
lower region techniques. Basic principle is to use whipping motion when
executing kicks. These are basics: mae geri (front kick - koshi,
kin or sokumen), hiza geri (knee), sokuto
geri ("knee crusher"), nami geri (technique
for close distance), nidan geri (double kick).
UKE WASA (defence
methods)
This is very misunderstood portion of karate.
(1) Tenshin - moving away from line of attack (use of neko ashi
dachi), (2) uchi uke - striking techniques used to disable
attackers` limb, (3) harai uke - soft blocking, i.e. deflecting
of attackers` limb, (4) hiki te - check-catch arm-pull in and (5)
kake te - holding and controlling.
